Ad Hoc - Software is being created but the process is being handed down from employee to employee through father-son mentoring. 

Description - This is the most common maturity level that an organization is at when they decide to "Take the leap". Usually your organization has outgrown the ad hoc approach and you are feeling the pain in slipped schedules and poor quality. 

Ability to assist: None – Ad hoc organizations usually have little or no support for SPI. Without support nothing can be accomplished.
